A Summary of Schola's Classes

You may have seen some of Schola's new flyers describing our K-12th grade classes. Included on each flyer is the phrase "Christian. Classical. Collaborative." These three words summarize what we are about at Schola.

CHRISTIAN: The foundation of Schola’s curriculum and instruction is the Word of God. We want to create a community of learners, not merely individuals studying the same material on the same day. And so it is important that our community of students, parents, and teachers share the same Foundation-—that is, Jesus Christ.

CLASSICAL: At Schola, students experience a feast of ideas and rich encounters with things that last. They learn to participate in "The Great Conversation," interacting with ideas and works that have stood the test of time. Of course, old doesn't always mean good. In fact, many of those old ideas are opposed to truth, as revealed by God's Word. This is why "Christian" comes first. We want students to recognize error and falsehood, even when presented in an appealing way. We want students to grapple with difficult questions, remembering what G.K. Chesterton once wrote: "The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.” And we want students to grow in their understanding of what is really good, true, and beautiful.

COLLABORATIVE: Homeschool classes are a three-legged stool, and each leg is essential for success. This involves cooperation by parents, students, and teachers. Parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children as they select classes and oversee at-home work, providing additional instruction as needed. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for learning, both in the classroom and at home. Schola instructors provide subject knowledge and resources, weekly assignments, and feedback/assessment. These classes offer additional structure, community, and accountability to homeschooling families.

It may not always take a village to raise a child--but neither do we have to do it alone. Whether you are a long-time Schola family or just learning about us, we invite your children to join the feast at Schola!
