This Digital Media course introduces students to the creative and technical foundations of photography, videography, and digital editing. Students will explore how visual media is used to tell stories, document community life, and communicate ideas clearly and creatively.

Through a balance of instruction, discussion, and hands-on projects, students will develop practical skills that can be applied to yearbook contributions, school events, personal projects, and future creative pursuits. Emphasis is placed on creative confidence, technical growth, and real-world application.

Students will learn the fundamentals of camera operation, visual composition, lighting, and storytelling through both still images and moving pictures. Photo and video editing fundamentals will be taught using accessible, free software, empowering students to refine their work with intention and creativity. The course also encourages collaboration and peer critique, providing students with experience working as part of a creative team while documenting Schola life and media projects.

This course will meet weekly with a mix of in-person instruction at Schola and online sessions as needed. Hands-on learning, guided practice, and creative projects will be emphasized throughout the year.

  • Practice photo and video editing using free, accessible tools
  • Introduction to videography including shooting, sequencing, and basic motion)
  • Content creation and ethical/responsible use of digital media
  • Collaboration and constructive critique to strengthen creative work
  • Real-world applications, including documenting school life, events, and projects

Home Studies

Students should expect 1–2 hours per week of independent work outside of class. This may include shooting assignments, editing images or video, and preparing creative projects. Larger projects (such as final photo stories or video pieces) may require additional time. Most homework will be creative and project-based rather than traditional written assignments.

Prerequisites

  • Students must be in middle or high school and able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • No prior photography or video experience required.

Texts & Materials

  • A device with a camera (smartphone, tablet, or digital camera)
  • Access to a computer or tablet capable of basic photo and video editing
  • Access to free editing software (recommendations will be provided)
  • Optional: external storage (USB drive or cloud storage)
  • Notebook or digital journal for planning and reflection
