IPC
Integrated Physics & Chemistry
Curriculum
Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) (also called Physical Science) is a rigorous course that develops a comprehensive understanding of the nature and structure of matter and the characteristics of energy. Introductory topics in chemistry and physics include problem solving; matter and its properties; atoms, compounds, and chemical reactions; solutions; Newton's Laws of Motion; forces; types of energy; Laws of Thermodynamics; light and sound; electricity and magnetism; order and design in nature.
This course is foundational to further high school science study as basic molecular and physical principles, which will be expanded in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, are discussed. Class discussion, group study, review discussions, review computations, and enrichment activities help students achieve mastery. Math is the language of science, thus students will use algebra manipulation to solve problems. In-class labs enhance and demonstrate topics taught in the textbook.
Note: In the state of Texas, the Recommended High School Program for college-bound students allows IPC with lab to count as the third or fourth science IF it is taken BEFORE Chemistry and Physics (now required for all graduating students under both the recommended and distinguished programs). IPC could be taken before or AFTER Biology but before Chemistry and Physics. Check admissions requirements for specific colleges and universities.
Home Studies
- The average student should plan to devote approximately 60-90 minutes per day including class time to science studies.
- Regular progress reports will be sent to parents.
Prerequisites
- Students must be thirteen years of age by September 1st.
- Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 1 highly recommended. Seek teacher approval if not enrolled in Algebra 1.
