Latin 1
Curriculum
The Schola High School Latin Program uses the Cambridge Latin Course, which includes:
- clear presentation of grammar, vocabulary, word families, and derivatives,
- vivid readings which weave culture and history into the fabric of Latin stories,
- characters and stories that engage and motivate students.
Reading is the heart of our Latin program from the very first week of class. Grammar and syntax are systematically presented during class time for comprehension and analysis.
Students use their weekly study time for exercises that build skills and confidence in reading and analyzing Latin, as well as exploring engaging topics to reinforce and extend the cultural and historical understanding of the Latin readings. Excellent online resources help students practice reading skills and vocabulary. Students may also further explore cultural and historical topics online.
Please note that Latin 1A and Latin 1B are the equivalent of Latin 1 presented at a slower pace. Completing these two courses provides one year of high school language credit.
Home Studies
- The average student should plan to devote approximately 25-45 minutes four days each week to Latin studies.
- Regular progress reports will be sent to parents.
Prerequisites
- Students in grades 8-12 can successfully enter Latin 1 or Latin 1a, but subsequent classes must be taken in sequence.
